St. Suitbertus stands in Düsseldorf-Bilk as a Catholic church with Neo-Gothic architecture and a complex building history. The original basilica has three aisles and Neo-Gothic forms. Construction began in 1905 after Alfred Tepe designed the church, while the tower followed in 1927. The church tower reaches 80.23 metres above Düsseldorf. It is the city’s second tallest tower and uses the simpler forms and materials of North German brick Gothic. Wartime bombing largely destroyed the church in 1943. Reconstruction started in 1947, followed by renewed stained-glass windows and later interior remodelling. The recorded restoration work was completed by 1990. Inside, a Johannes Klais organ from 1958 has 47 registers across three manuals and a pedal. Romanus Seifert thoroughly overhauled the organ in 2017. The tower also contains a five-bell bronze chime cast in 1931, with only the smallest bell surviving wartime melting. St. Suitbertus has been a protected monument since 1994. The tower serves as a transmission site for Düsseldorf’s university radio station and dominates the building complex.
