St. Matthäus stands in southwest Garath as a Catholic parish church shaped by architect Gottfried Böhm. Its construction took place between 1968 and 1970. Böhm combines brick at ground level with exposed concrete above, then breaks the rectangular plan into interlocking cubes, apses and round towers. Asymmetry gives the building distinctive Romanesque echoes. Above the altar, a tent-like roof rises to the complex’s highest point, carrying a small cross and Böhm’s weather vane. The unconventional interior reaches a striking height beneath this roof.

Inside, Fritz Schäfer’s wooden sculpture, Matthias Heiermann’s tabernacle column and his altar cross share space with a bronze Stations of the Cross. The tabernacle column stands in a brick tower containing Rhine pebbles. An organ by Albert Fabritius, presented to the community in 1975, supports the church’s musical life. St. Matthäus became a parish church in 2007. Together with the St. Hildegardis senior residence and chapel, the church forms an urban ensemble at the centre of Garath. A 1989 renovation repaired damaged concrete surfaces. The parish emerged from merging St. Norbert and St. Theresia, with its church and office central to today’s parish area. The parish maintains a youth facility and Johannes House in Hellerhof.
