St. Mariä Empfängnis stands in central Düsseldorf as a Roman Catholic church with a prominent double-tower façade. Its Rhenish neo-Gothic design rises through a three-aisled basilica and two hexagonal towers, each 80 metres high. Ludwig Becker designed the building, constructed between 1894 and 1896 for the growing South Pempelfort district. A spacious vestibule and an organ loft connect the towers above the entrance.

South Pempelfort’s growth led to a new parish and preceded the church’s foundation stone in 1894. A temporary church had already served worshippers on Charlottenstraße since 1890. A bombing raid on 12 June 1943 left the building largely destroyed during the Second World War. Reconstruction continued from 1948 to 1969, followed by an interior restoration between 1976 and 1982.

Inside, a high choir with an ambulatory meets four side choirs arranged like chapels. Günter Grote’s stained-glass windows from the early 1960s combine ornamental, symbolic and figurative elements. Johannes Klais built the mechanically operated organ in 1956, giving it 44 registers within its later case. The bells cast in 1896 survived both world wars and remain a tangible link with the building’s first years.
