St. Andreas stands in the heart of Düsseldorf as a Roman Catholic church in the South German Baroque style. Jesuits built it between 1622 and 1629. Its spacious interior combines elaborate stucco by Johannes Kuhn of Strasbourg with life-size sculptures of apostles and Jesuit saints. Wheelchair access makes the church easier to experience.

The Jesuits began using the church after arriving in Düsseldorf in 1619. From 1708, the building served as the court church of the Counts Palatine of Neuburg. After the order dissolved in 1773, it remained a parish church until 2005, then became a Dominican monastery church. Johann Hugo von Wilderer worked here as organist during a period when Düsseldorf developed a strong musical culture.

A mausoleum by Venetian architect Simone del Sarto holds the tombs of several Electors Palatine, including Johann Wilhelm. The Second World War destroyed the original high altar, while Ewald Mataré created its replacement in 1960. Ernst Deger painted the two Marian side altars, and the organ traces back to Peter Kemper’s 1782 instrument. Rudolf von Beckerath Orgelbau restored that organ in 2003.
