Schloss Mickeln stands in Düsseldorf’s Himmelgeist neighbourhood, surrounded by the park that frames this historic manor house. Its square plan measures 19.55 metres on each side, with matching façades and an outside staircase on the northern side. A lime-tree avenue marks the entrance, while open meadows and groups of mature trees shape the grounds. Wheelchair access makes the site easier to experience.

Josef Niehaus built the manor between 1840 and 1842 for Herzog Ludwig von Arenberg, after fire destroyed the earlier Haus Mickeln in 1836. The vanished building traced its history to 1210. Niehaus drew on sixteenth-century villas by Galeazzo Alessi, creating a summer residence with clear Italianate influence. Maximilian Friedrich Weyhe designed the surrounding gardens in 1843, his final park project, and Düsseldorf restored them in 2001.

Plane trees, European beeches and two Lebanon cedars survive from the original planting, with some trees exceeding 150 years. These specimens include natural monuments of Düsseldorf. Since June 2000, Düsseldorf University has used the estate as a conference centre and guest house. Academic and public gatherings take place here, while the park preserves a quiet setting around the architecture.
