The Josephskapelle stands in Düsseldorf’s old town, where Schlossufer and Altestadt meet beside the Rhine. Matteo Alberti designed this baroque chapel for the Carmelite nuns, using a Greek-cross plan. Builders laid its foundation stone in 1712 and completed the chapel in 1716. Students of Tiepolo painted the ceilings, adding an artistic detail to the chapel’s interior. Maria Anna Amalia Auguste von Pfalz-Sulzbach served here as a Wittelsbach prioress from 1726 into the late 1730s. The chapel’s history also includes destruction during World War II in 1943.

Reconstruction followed in the 1950s, while restoration during the 1970s largely returned the building to its original state. Further interior restoration took place between 1989 and 1996, followed by Neo-Rococo frescoes in 1994 and 1995. Innsbruck painter Wolfram Köberl created those frescoes from his own designs. The chapel is also the burial place of Émilie Schneider, a Catholic nun and mystic. Since 2013, Samuel Green’s late-Baroque organ has stood inside the Josephskapelle. Built in 1795 for St Mary’s Church in Chatham, the mahogany instrument has fourteen registers, two manuals, and no pedalboard.
