In Düsseldorf, the Hofgärtnerhaus presents Baroque architecture shaped by court service, destruction, reconstruction and cultural use. Nicolas de Pigage directed its first construction between 1769 and 1770.

Elector Charles-Theodore commissioned the house as the official residence of the court gardener responsible for the court garden. Peter Köhler added a side extension and another floor in 1780.

Balls, concerts and private theatre performances later made the Hofgärtnerhaus a social venue within Düsseldorf’s court-garden setting. French artillery destroyed the building in 1796.

Reconstruction began in 1802 under Elector Maximilian-Joseph, with court architect Kaspar Huschberger overseeing the work. From 1821, servants and Düsseldorf School painters used the house.

Alfred Rethel belonged to that circle, while the building also operated as Widow Hilger’s Café, a garden restaurant. In 1872, it held a warehouse and library.

World War II destroyed the Hofgärtnerhaus again, and reconstruction in 1955 added extensions on both sides. The Goethe Museum occupied it before moving to Jägerhof Castle.

Since 1988, the building has housed the Theater Museum of Düsseldorf, continuing its cultural role. Its original form had one storey, a central entrance and a quarter-circle mansard roof.
