Franz-von-Sales-Kirche stands in Düsseldorf’s Oberbilk district, near the border with Wersten, as a Catholic branch of St. Maria Rosenkranz parish. Architect Hans Schwippert shaped the building between 1969 and 1971, with contributions from Friedrich Kohlmann and Ernst Kayser. Red brick forms its round, egg-shaped shell, giving the church a distinctive presence among nearby streets and schools.

The ground once held Scheidlingsmühle, a mill first mentioned in 1435 before fire destroyed it in 1893. During construction, workers found an old millstone and incorporated it into the sacrament house as a foundation stone. Inside, ascending semicircular seating surrounds an altar placed at the lowest point, recalling an ancient theatre or lecture hall. Schwippert imagined the plan as a flatfish, with the altar forming its head and the entrances its fins.

A masonry wall with varied joint widths strengthens the natural acoustics, supporting concerts and performances. Paul Ott’s 1958 organ contains eleven registers across two manuals and a pedal with mechanical action. The space also hosts school masses, Polish Catholic services, contemporary music celebrations and the “Update” service. One detail connects every visit to the site’s earlier life: the millstone still carries Scheidlingsmühle into the church’s modern architecture.
