Marstall stands in Dresden’s Wilsdruffer Vorstadt, between Ostra-Allee, Devrientstraße and Am Zwinger. The former royal stable complex once bordered the Duchess Garden and the Zwinger, forming a four-winged structure for horses.

Built between 1745 and 1748, the complex replaced stables in the Johanneum after they became an art gallery. Christian Traugott Weinlig added an 80-metre riding hall from 1794 to 1795, giving the northwest wing classical forms, pilasters and Franz Pettrich’s sandstone relief of an ancient chariot. Joseph Thürmer redesigned the side wings and the front facing the Zwinger pond in 1832. Air raids partially destroyed the building in February 1945, while Gerhard Guder’s post-1950 reconstruction brought it into the theatre workshops of the Semperoper and Schauspielhaus.

The riding hall remains the clearest detail to picture: 80 metres long, 20 metres wide, and marked by strict classical lines.
