Kathedrale Ss. Trinitatis, also called Dresden Cathedral, stands in Dresden’s historic centre near the Elbe River. This Catholic cathedral serves the Diocese of Dresden-Meissen. Gaetano Chiaveri designed it between 1738 and 1751 for Augustus III, during Dresden’s predominantly Protestant era. An ornate elevated passage once connected the church with Dresden Castle. The building began as the Catholic Church of the Royal Court of Saxony.

War damage during the bombing of Dresden led to restoration by 1962, followed by further renovation in the early twenty-first century. Inside, a Rococo pulpit by Balthasar Permoser accompanies a restored organ. That instrument was Gottfried Silbermann’s final work, while the crypts preserve royal burials from the Wettin family. The Founders’ Crypt contains the tombs of Augustus III of Poland and Maria Josepha. Its ground area approaches 4,800 square metres.

Seventy-eight stone figures by Lorenzo Mattielli adorn the balustrades and niches, showing apostles, saints and church dignitaries. The crypts also hold Augustus the Strong’s heart.
