Blockhaus stands on the western side of Dresden’s Neustädter Brückenkopf, beside the Augustusbrücke and near Neustädter Markt. Its Baroque façade reflects plans by French architect Zacharias Longuelune, who designed the building as one half of a projected pair.

Construction began in 1732, paused after the Elector’s death in 1733, and finished in modified form under Johann Christoph Knöffel in 1749. Prussian troops signed their capitulation here during the Seven Years’ War, while later rooms housed Dresden’s governors and the Saxon War Ministry. A 1892 extension added another floor, before wartime damage left the building a ruin for 35 years.

Rebuilt between 1978 and 1982, the building later became home to the Archiv der Avantgarden and Egidio Marzona’s collection. A floating concrete cube now houses the archive, with exhibition rooms, workshops and a cafeteria surrounding it. Look towards the Golden Rider nearby, then imagine this same setting carrying military signatures, government offices and avant-garde works across three centuries.
