The Alte Mensa stands on the main campus of Technische Universität Dresden, in the Räcknitz district. It opened as a cafeteria in 1925. The building combines student dining, architectural history and rooms for university gatherings. Several entrances connect it with Mommsenstraße, Helmholtzstraße and Dülferstraße. The complex adjoins the former rectorate, an example of socialist classicism. Festsaal Dülferstraße occupies the upper floor of the southern section. The hall hosts events, senate meetings, lectures and examinations. A renovated atrium forms a food distribution area beneath 470 square metres of sun-protection glass. Brat² serves meals from the ground floor. The Zebradiele café, basement kitchens, dining halls and outdoor terraces organise the building’s everyday student life. A comprehensive renovation reshaped the atrium and restored parts of the representative complex. The restored glass roof received an Innovation Prize for Architecture and Glass in 2009. The Alte Mensa property is wheelchair accessible.
