Burgruine Hohensyburg stands in Dortmund’s Syburg area, within the Hörde district of Germany. The site began as the Saxon hillfort Sigiburg. Archaeological evidence links occupation here to the Neolithic era, while the later castle rose around 1100 from Ruhr sandstone. Count Eberhard I of the Mark partly destroyed it in 1287. The ruin preserves remains of the bergfrieds, a palas, the surrounding wall, and its forecourts. A war memorial by Fritz Bagdons dates from 1930. The Vincke Tower, built in 1857 and restored in 1955, commemorates Baron Ludwig von Vincke, the first Oberpräsident of Westphalia. The Kaiser Wilhelm Monument also stands within the complex. Nearby, St Peter’s Church dates to 776 and remains Dortmund’s oldest sacred building after several reconstructions. Trails around Hohensyburg overlook the Ruhr, the Lenne, Hengsteysee, and the Sauerland mountains. A minigolf course adds a recreational feature beside the historic site. Charlemagne captured the hillfort in 772, and the Saxons briefly recovered it before his renewed fortification in 775. That fief later passed to Brandenburg and then Prussia.
