Monumento alla Resistenza Europea stands in a green lakeside park in Como, near the Monumento ai Caduti. Gianni Colombo designed this open memorial for European resistance fighters and victims of war.

Three granite ramps form a circle, with built-in stairs that rise before ending abruptly. Three metal panels lean at 55 degrees and carry eighteen messages from resistance fighters in different European countries. The texts appear in their original languages, sometimes in the writers’ own handwriting, with translations on marble plaques. Elli Voigt’s farewell letter stands out in large letters among the inscriptions.

A stele holds stones from Natzweiler-Struthof, Ravensbrück, Sachsenhausen, Bergen-Belsen, Auschwitz, Dachau, and Mauthausen. A pyramid-shaped iron sculpture contains a stone from Hiroshima, linking the site to the atomic bombings. As you walk between the sloping ramps and tilted panels, the uneven geometry creates disorientation and invites reflection on resistance, imprisonment, and peace.
