St. Peter is a Roman Catholic church in Cologne, Germany, where Gothic architecture rises above layers of Roman and Romanesque foundations. Its red-brick nave, raised bluestone chancel and dark wooden coffered ceiling create a striking interior shaped by loss and reconstruction. The Romanesque west tower dates from 1170 and remains a visible link with Cologne’s earlier churches.

Built between 1513 and 1525, the Gothic structure stands on the remains of earlier sacred buildings. A bombing raid in 1943 destroyed the church almost completely, while surviving stained glass and altarpieces helped guide the post-war restoration. The Jesuits took responsibility in 1960, and the recovered works by Peter Paul Rubens and Cornelius Schut returned the following year. Rubens was baptised here, and his Crucifixion of St Peter hangs inside beside Schut’s Conversion of St Peter.

Kunst-Station Sankt Peter brings contemporary art, music and literature into this historic setting. The medieval font and wrought-iron Baroque grille are among the few older furnishings that remain. Look upward beneath the reconstructed vaults, where the dark ceiling and red brick preserve the building’s fragmentary post-war character.
