# St. Georg

St. Georg is a Romanesque church in Cologne and one of the city’s twelve Romanesque churches. Consecrated toward the end of the eleventh century, it rises above the remains of Roman and Merovingian buildings. Its trefoil-shaped eastern end gives the chancel and transepts three rounded apses, while columns support the nave arcades instead of piers.

The massive westwerk has walls about five metres thick and dates from 1188. A north portal followed in 1551, while later additions included a Renaissance porch and a Baroque dome, both destroyed during the Second World War. Reconstruction restored the church’s 1930 appearance by 1964, including a steep copper hip roof over the westwerk. Expressionist stained-glass designs by Johan Thorn Prikker, first made in the late 1920s, now appear in reconstructed windows.

Inside, Wilhelm Wysch’s vividly coloured 1545 epitaph stands beside a richly decorated sacrament house from 1556. A sign choir performs here, and Sunday Mass includes sign-language translation alongside technical hearing aids. Inclusive tours, reflection days and group meetings bring people with and without hearing disabilities together in parish life.
