# St. Aposteln

St. Aposteln is a Romanesque basilica near Cologne’s busy Neumarkt, where thick walls and rounded arches create a calm presence in the city centre. Its single western tower rises about 67 metres, while the eastern end forms a distinctive trefoil choir with three apses.

The site once stood beside the Roman road to Aachen, just outside Cologne’s ancient walls. The church traces its origins to the ninth century, and a monastery occupied the site by the tenth century, before major construction began under Archbishops Heribert and Pilgrim. Eleventh-century masonry survives in the nave and western transept, although later repairs and post-war restoration have added newer stonework and modern construction techniques. Medieval pilgrims came for its relics, while the collegiate church also supported worship and education.

Today, Latin high masses with Gregorian chant, concerts, exhibitions and community food distribution continue its long religious and civic role. Look upward beneath the western tower, then follow the rounded arches towards the cloverleaf-shaped choir.
