Haus Neuerburg stands in Cologne’s Altstadt-Nord as a protected historic monument beside Gülichplatz. Architect Emil Felix designed the building for Heinrich Neuerburg. Construction took place in two phases, from 1921 to 1923 and again in 1928 and 1929. The building served as a company headquarters. Dutch brickwork, Kirchheim shell limestone, and wrought iron shape its exterior and connect it with the nearby Carnival Fountain. Cologne sculptor Wolfgang Wallner created the sculptural decoration. The west wing recalls Renaissance buildings, while the south wing presents a façade inspired by a Baroque palace. A slender stair tower rises in the courtyard. Its design recalls old Cologne patrician houses, and a similar tower stands at Richmodisturm near Neumarkt. The building suffered relatively limited damage during the Second World War. Reconstruction from 1947 to 1950 changed the complex, because former west-wing arcades and a courtyard mansard roof did not return. Municipal offices use the building, including Cologne’s registry office. Heinrich Neuerburg also conducted Greek consular duties here during the 1920s and 1930s. An accessible entrance and wheelchair facilities support visitors. Haus Neuerburg links Cologne’s industrial history with postwar reconstruction and civic administration.
