Sir Keith Park is a bronze statue in the City of Westminster, standing within Waterloo Gardens. Sculptor Les Johnson created this bronze memorial for Westminster. It depicts Air Chief Marshal Sir Keith Park, a New Zealander, wearing full flying gear and drawing on his gloves. His figure faces east across the historic Waterloo Place. Nineteenth-century cast iron railings surround the plinth and place the memorial within the historic Waterloo Gardens. The Athenaeum stands beside the memorial site in Westminster. New Zealand House stands in its shadow, linking the setting with Park’s New Zealand origins. Five other statues help shape the surrounding symmetry. The memorial was proposed to complete that arrangement beside Waterloo Place, where military monuments and sculptures form a wider group. Park commanded the Royal Air Force defence of London. His wartime command connects the statue with the defence of London and south-east England. Bronze, granite and nineteenth-century ironwork give the artwork a clear material setting among Westminster’s monuments.
