Grotta di Matermania opens on Capri’s southeastern side, close to the Arco Naturale and the scenic Pizzolungo path. Steps lead through views of cliffs and vegetation before the limestone chamber comes into sight. Water erosion shaped this natural cavity over thousands of years, leaving a space about twenty-seven metres long, eighteen metres wide, and eighteen metres high.

During Roman times, people transformed the cave into a nymphaeum dedicated to nymphs and water deities. A few fragments of ancient walls still cling to the interior. Rituals honoured Cybele, also known as Mater Magna, the Great Mother. Low-relief carvings have also led some interpretations towards Mithras, whose worship often used underground spaces. Those surviving stones connect the open rock to Capri’s older religious life. The contrast stays with you: a vast natural chamber containing only scattered traces of ceremonies held there.
