The Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa stands in Cape Town’s Silo District at the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront. The museum presents contemporary art from Africa and its diaspora. Heatherwick Studio transforms a historic grain silo into galleries with open spaces and a central atrium. Concrete cylinders preserve the building’s industrial character. Architects carve the silo’s interior into a cathedral-like space, while strengthened glass panels bring natural light inside. Pillowed glass panels cover the upper floors and contrast with the historic structure. The museum combines temporary exhibitions, a permanent collection, educational programmes, residency programmes, and a sculpture garden. A rooftop restaurant and coffee shop extend the museum’s public spaces. Exhibitions explore history, memory, land, personal narrative, and African and diasporic identities through drawing and installation. Named exhibitions include The Five Continents of All Our Desires and Waiting For Gebane. Acts at the Crossroads examines land and the body through Otobong Nkanga’s drawings and installations. Two Together pairs works from the permanent collection to offer different perspectives. The building’s conversion preserves industrial heritage while creating a major contemporary art setting. The Zeitz MOCAA connects architecture, exhibition-making, education, and public cultural life.
