The former Rhodes Memorial Tea Room sits on the slopes of Table Mountain, directly above the University of Cape Town. From this hillside, views extend across the Cape Flats towards distant mountains. Under the trees, families and friends once shared tea, scones, picnics, and quiet gatherings in the surrounding landscape.

The neighbouring Rhodes Memorial was designed by Sir Herbert Baker and dedicated to Cecil Rhodes. Its carefully planned setting originally included stone pines and silver trees, which framed Table Mountain and provided shade. A fire damaged the area extensively, destroying many trees and leaving the restaurant building as a shell. The sandstone walls remain, while hopes of rebuilding keep this familiar Cape Town place connected to its community.

The clearest detail is the contrast between those surviving walls and the open mountain view beyond them.
