The former Rhodes Memorial Tea Room sits on the slopes of Table Mountain, directly above the University of Cape Town. From this hillside, views extend across the Cape Flats towards distant mountains. The neighbouring Rhodes Memorial was designed by Sir Herbert Baker and dedicated to Cecil Rhodes. A fire damaged the area extensively, destroying many trees and leaving the restaurant building as a shell. The sandstone walls remain, while hopes of rebuilding keep this familiar Cape Town place connected to its community.
