The Castle Military Museum occupies part of the Castle of Good Hope, South Africa’s oldest surviving colonial building, in Cape Town. The fortress has thick walls from the seventeenth century. Built by the Dutch East India Company, the castle served ships travelling between Europe and East Asia. Local Signal Hill stone appears in its construction. Yellow walls help reduce heat and sunlight across the fort. Its pentagonal plan contains bastions named after the principal titles of William III of Orange-Nassau. The inner courtyard links the former church, bakery, workshops, living quarters and cells. A church, bakery and workshops once occupied the fortress. Part of the castle became a prison during the Second Boer War. The bell tower contains a bell cast in Amsterdam. Today, museum exhibits present military history inside this surviving colonial building. The museum also reflects the castle’s ceremonial role for traditional Cape regiments. Traditional Cape regiments use the castle for ceremonies. The exhibits preserve military stories within these architectural spaces.
