Bo-Kaap Museum stands in Cape Town’s Bo-Kaap, inside one of the area’s earliest homes, built in the mid-eighteenth century. The house presents local Islamic culture and heritage through the life of a nineteenth-century Muslim family. Its early Cape Dutch design includes a curving Baroque parapet, teak-shuttered sash windows, and a distinctive boenonder door. A small courtyard connects to the street through a narrow lane.

The surrounding Bo-Kaap brings colourful houses, steep cobbled streets, and a history shaped by Muslim communities and freed slaves. The area became exclusively residential for Cape Muslims under the Group Areas Act in 1950. Restoration during the 1970s removed later alterations and reinstated yellowwood floors, ceiling boards, and simulated historic roof beams. Look closely at the entrance: separate upper and lower door panels, wrought-iron replicas, and teak shutters preserve the house’s Cape Dutch character.
