Artscape Theatre Centre rises on reclaimed land in Cape Town’s Foreshore, with modern performance spaces at the city’s cultural heart. Its architectural design came from Murray and Roberts Construction.

The complex brings together an Opera House seating 1,487 people, a Theatre for 540, and an Arena Theatre for 140. These spaces accommodate opera, drama, dance, and music. Opened in 1971 as the Nico Malan Theatre Centre, it was commissioned by the Provincial Administration of the Cape Province and managed by CAPAB. CAPAB’s dissolution brought the name Artscape in March 2001.

The planned opening of Aida changed when illness led CAPAB Ballet’s Sylvia to take its place. Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte appeared in Afrikaans, alongside Puccini’s Madama Butterfly. The halls host the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra, Cape Town Opera, Cape Town City Ballet, and Fine Music Radio. Its oversight reaches the Maynardville Open-Air Theatre in Wynberg, beyond the Foreshore.
