Bab Zuweila stands in Cairo as a medieval stone gate with twin towers and a central archway. Its towers frame the southern entrance to the old walled city. Built in the late eleventh century, the gate formed part of Cairo’s defences and hosted ceremonial entrances. The gate once marked Cairo’s southern entrance to the walled city. Under the Mamluks, Sultan al-Mu'ayyad Sheikh built his mosque directly beside it, joining fortress and faith. The mosque’s minarets rise from the gate’s towers. Inside, marble, calligraphy and light reveal the refined work of Mamluk craftsmen in the mosque. Narrow spiral stairs climb through the towers towards the top. From above, Cairo spreads across domes, rooftops and the distant shimmer of the Nile. The view brings the city’s past and present together. Merchants, spices and everyday sounds surround the gate in the living streets of historic Cairo. Its stone surfaces carry the marks of wind, prayer and centuries of use.
