Karmelita Monastery rises with solid Baroque facades in Budapest, Hungary, where a church and cloister took shape in 1734. Restored details trace a building shaped by prayer, theatre, military use and government.

A royal decree later forced the Carmelites to leave, turning the complex into a theatre and then a casino. Hungary’s first Hungarian-language play took place here in 1790, followed by Beethoven’s performance in 1800. Wars brought damage, while postwar restoration and later renewal combined Baroque ornament with modern security. The offices of the Prime Minister now occupy the interior.
