Domonkos kolostor stands among scattered walls and vaulted cellars on a Hungarian island, where Gothic stonework frames quiet ruins. King Béla IV founded the Dominican nunnery after the Mongol invasion, fulfilling a vow made during the kingdom’s survival. His daughter Margaret lived and prayed here, choosing religious life within walls that also welcomed noble girls for education. Her devotion later brought sainthood, pilgrims, legends, and investigations to the convent.

The complex once held a Gothic church, a royal residence, gardens supplied by water channels, and a hospital for travellers. Margaret’s tomb, first carved from red marble and later rebuilt in white, formed the spiritual centre of the site. Peace agreements between kings were sealed here before the Turkish occupation forced the nuns to flee and left the buildings in ruin. Floods buried the stones, while later excavations uncovered graves, medieval scripts, codices, and traces of the convent’s daily life. Between the arches and cellars, the marble tomb and exposed manuscripts keep Margaret’s world close to the surface.
