# Avilai Nagy Szent Teréz templom

In Hungary, Avilai Nagy Szent Teréz templom rises above its surroundings with a 65-metre tower. The grand Catholic church carries the dedication to Saint Teresa of Ávila. Its parish began in 1777, when local worshippers gathered inside a small wooden chapel. Stone construction followed in 1801 from plans by Fidel Kasselik. Worshippers entered the completed church in 1809, while Mihály Pollack later shaped the interior.

Miklós Ybl added the ornate spire to the tower in 1871. Inside, József Károly Schöfft’s main altarpiece, created around 1828, draws attention. Four bells preserve separate inscriptions and histories, including replacements for bells lost during the Second World War. The largest bell sounds at noon, while the others mark daily Mass and all four ring during major celebrations.

A modern columbarium beneath the floor connects present remembrance with older church burial traditions. Above it, the stone façade and tall tower bring together several generations of Hungarian architectural work. Aoife
