Waller Wasserturm stands in Bremen’s Walle district, where a concrete base preserves the site of a former water tower. Built in 1905, the tower reached 61 metres and held 3,000 cubic metres of drinking water. It supplied Bremen’s western districts and was once Europe’s largest water tower.

A bombing raid in August 1944 heavily damaged the tower and nearby residential area, and demolition left only its concrete foundation. That foundation now supports a seven-storey octagonal building with 42 apartments, completed in early 2018. Tablet-controlled lighting and heating, together with video intercoms, give the residences distinctly modern equipment.

The site also hosts the cycling race Rund um den Wasserturm Walle, linking the landmark with Bremen’s cycling scene. Franz Radziwill depicted the tower, while a 1995 Deutsche Bundespost stamp carried its image beyond Bremen. What remains is a striking contrast: an old concrete foundation carrying an angular residential building.
