Theater am Goetheplatz stands in Bremen’s cultural district, east of the old town, as the city’s main theatre building. It serves as the main venue of Theater Bremen.

Completed in 1913, the building brings Neoclassical architecture to Bremen’s cultural district. The earlier name was Schauspielhaus am Ostertor. It began as the second establishment of the private Bremer Schaubühne firm and opened with Oscar Wilde’s A Woman of No Importance. After the First World War, the theatre adapted prices and presentations for different community segments.

After the Second World War, major extensions and facade changes reshaped the theatre. Werner Commichau and Hans Stormraising designed the altered facade. The simplified facade accompanied the theatre’s reopening in 1950. A 2004 modernisation raised the roof and installed new sound and lighting systems. Hamburg’s Dinse Feest Zurl Architekten carried out that modernisation.

The theatre presents musicals, opera, and drama within its historic architectural setting. In 2007, the theatre received the Opera House of the Year award. The building has been listed since 2005.
