# St. Johann

St. Johann is a Roman Catholic provost church in Bremen with origins as a Franciscan abbey church. Its Brick Gothic walls rise beneath a broad pitched roof.

Franciscans founded a monastery here in 1225, and a larger vaulted hall church replaced its first structure by 1380. The west gable combines pointed arch windows with a cruciform window bearing a Star of David.

During the Reformation, the monastery closed and the site became Bremen’s first hospital and mental asylum. The church later served Protestant congregations, Huguenots and Belgian religious refugees.

Catholic worship returned after official recognition in 1806, and the church was rededicated in 1823. Restoration raised the surrounding streets and floor to prevent flooding.

A former cellar became the crypt in 1992. The church originally had no tower, following Franciscan rules, but it carried a small flèche.

St. Johann remains Bremen’s only surviving monastery church and belongs to a provostship with community buildings. Its organ combines mechanical and electronic systems.
