Mausoleum Knoop stands in Bremen’s Walle district, within Waller Cemetery, as a protected monument of architecture. Architect Gustav Runge created this distinctive neogothic design. Construction took place during the historicist period, with a gabled roof above an open pillar hall. It stands beside a small hill and lake within the cemetery. Its square crypt uses tuff-like stone and creates a grotto-like appearance beneath the gabled building. Diedrich Samuel Kropp sculpted the Christ figure displayed on the front balustrade. The mausoleum was built for Baron Ludwig Knoop, a textile merchant active in Bremen, London and Russia. Baron Ludwig Knoop was buried there alongside members of his family. The family history includes Louise Dorothea Betty Albrecht, grandmother of later Lower Saxony Minister-President Ernst Albrecht. Bremen placed the structure under monument protection. Restoration addressed major cracks in the crypt ceiling and stability problems affecting the grave site. The mausoleum forms an architectural focal point within Waller Cemetery’s landscape.
