Löschboot 1 is a historic firefighting boat moored as a traditional ship in Vegesack harbour, Bremen. The August Pahl shipyard built it in Hamburg in 1941. Originally built for the Kriegsmarine, the boat later served in Wilhelmshaven, Hamburg, Bremerhaven and on the Weser River. Its firefighting service ended in 1995. Bremerhaven’s professional fire department used Löschboot 1 until 1973, including operations on the Weser River. A steel-and-glass control stand replaced its wooden wheelhouse in 1974. This change allowed the boat to pass beneath bridges in Kaiserhafen. A six-cylinder diesel engine provides 200 horsepower for the vessel. Its AMAG Hilpert pumps could deliver 12,000 litres of water per minute in parallel operation. A machine telegraph connected the engine and reversing gear directly to the control stand. The boat carried a two-person crew, with a firefighting team joining during operations. After its working life, Löschboot 1 became a museum ship in Bremerhaven’s museum harbour. The boat has belonged to the Schifferverein Rekum and surrounding area from 1919 since 2007. Bremen’s State Office for Monument Preservation recognised Löschboot 1 as a technical monument in 2023. Its hull and equipment connect maritime engineering, firefighting history and Bremen’s working harbours.
