Cinema im Ostertor stands in Bremen’s Ostertor district, a neighbourhood often called das Viertel. It is recognised as Germany’s first dedicated arthouse cinema.

The venue occupies part of a historic residential complex protected as a monument. The auditorium keeps film screenings intimate for its audiences. The cinema’s programme has earned national awards and sustained its place in Bremen’s film culture.

Kammer-Lichtspiele once operated from the same cinema building. Bremen’s Kommunalkino also used this cinema as its venue. Gretel and Otto Draber ran that earlier operation before the venue developed into Cinema im Ostertor.

The foyer connects the auditorium with Heldenbar, adding drinks and conversation around film screenings. Heldenbar shares the foyer with the cinema venue. Sven Regener’s novel Neue Vahr Süd places Cinema im Ostertor within its protagonist’s story.

The Settje family once managed the cinema. The Bremer Filmkunsttheater group carries responsibility for the cinema’s management. Its protected building gives the film programme an architectural setting.
