The Breitenbachhof is a housing complex in Bremen’s Gröpelingen district, built between 1915 and 1919. Architect Rudolf Jacobs designed this residential complex for railway workers. The Eisenbahn-Spar- und Bauverein commissioned social housing as an alternative to cramped tenements. Railway workers shaped the complex’s original social purpose.

Its perimeter block encloses large, green courtyards, reached through arched gateways and connected by stairwell houses. The courtyards create a spacious centre for residents. Three-storey plastered buildings carry gabled brick roofs, while the upper floor joins the roof structure through brick cladding. Distinctive mansard roofs distinguish the later attic spaces.

Every apartment includes either a loggia or balcony, while the façades carry carefully designed architectural embellishments. Wooden staircases, terrazzo floors, wall tiles, and entrance doors remain inside the complex. The listed monument has preserved architectural and social history since 1978. Some apartments are occupied by residents from Werkstatt Bremen.

The BeiUns neighbourhood centre occupies the former bakery and continues the site’s community function. The former bakery remains a community hub at Breitenbachhof. Its preserved materials, courtyards, gateways, and roof forms make the ensemble legible as planned housing.
