Rafenstein, also known as Castel Rafenstein, is a medieval castle ruin above Bolzano in South Tyrol. Its remains occupy a rocky outcrop in the Talvera Valley. The fortress controlled a secondary route between Rauhenbühel and Bolzano, giving its position strategic importance during the Middle Ages. Written records first name it Rauenstone in 1217.

The castle changed hands several times, including among the von Wangen brothers and Francisk von Rafenstain. A siege in 1277 nearly destroyed the castle during a feud involving the Bishop of Trento and Duke Meinhard II of Tyrol. Renaissance rebuilding added new walls and towers during the sixteenth century. Abandonment and bombardment during the Napoleonic Wars later deepened the ruin.

The remains include a medieval kitchen, castle walls and Renaissance marble friezes. A small museum presents archaeological finds, including a model showing the castle during Francisk von Rafenstain’s era. Access follows a steep road from Bolzano or the state road to Jenesien.
