Mariensäule stands in Marienpark, directly in front of the Goethe School in Bolzano, Italy. Andreas Kompatscher created this monument as a column with a Corinthian capital and a statue of the Virgin Mary above it.

Erected in 1909, the monument commemorates the cholera epidemic that struck Bolzano in 1836. Its inscription records 1,191 infections and 216 deaths from what it calls “Asiatic cholera.” Biblical figures surround the column, including Moses holding the tablets of the law. Cultural heritage protection followed in 2009, and a comprehensive restoration took place in 2019.

The figures around the column give the memorial a distinct religious character. From Marienpark, the statue faces the Goethe School while preserving a precise account of a difficult chapter in Bolzano’s history.
