Castello Firmiano - Schloss Sigmundskron rises near Bolzano on a porphyry crag, combining a castle, fortress, towers, stairways, and paths. From this height, you can look across the surrounding South Tyrolean landscape while moving through the Messner Mountain Museum Firmian.

First mentioned as Formicaria in 945, the stronghold changed hands before Duke Sigismund the Rich acquired it in 1473. He renamed it Sigmundskron and strengthened its walls against firearms, while later neglect left parts of the complex in disrepair. Restoration in 1976 preceded its transformation into a museum after Reinhold Messner received a licence in 2003, with the permanent exhibition exploring human relationships with mountains.

A Neolithic grave discovered in 2006 stands among remains of the original Formigar castle. The site also carries political memory: Silvius Magnago led a major autonomy rally here in 1957, making these walls a symbol of South Tyrolean independence.
