Albwasserversorgung in Blaubeuren records the water system created for the Swabian Alb. Here, limestone ground lets rainwater disappear quickly underground. For centuries, residents stored rain in Hülen and cisterns or hauled barrels uphill. Dry spells made those supplies unreliable, while roof wells and pits often threatened hygiene.

Around 1870, Teuringshofen introduced organised pumping from the valleys through pipes. Water wheels drove piston pumps and lifted water uphill. Sand filtration prepared the water before it reached villages and homes. The approach met scepticism, yet its first pump station appeared at Vienna’s 1873 World’s Fair. In Blaubeuren, a monument honours the people who established this regional network.

The system linked village groups across the plateau. Clean water changed daily work, farming and children’s health. Historic pump stations preserve water wheels, pumps and tools from that transformation.
