U Potsdamer Platz brings you into Berlin’s U2 line beneath the busy Potsdamer Platz. The wheelchair-accessible station combines everyday transport with a preserved early twentieth-century interior.

Paul Wittig designed the original station, which opened beneath Leipziger Platz and later endured repeated closures, wartime damage and flooding. After the Second World War, workers pumped water from the tunnels and restored train service. The Berlin Wall then left Potsdamer Platz on the border, turning the station into a ghost station until reopening after German reunification. Its long closure helped preserve much of the historic fabric, and the station is recognised as a historical monument.

Alfred Grenander’s design gives the interior its distinctive character: white wall tiles carry a green motif, while matching green kiosks stand on the platform. A flat plastered ceiling once held a central light dome, which disappeared in the 1930s. A former passageway to the Wertheim department store now leads towards the centre of the square.
