Staatsoper Unter den Linden stands on Berlin’s Unter den Linden boulevard as a historic opera house and architectural landmark. King Frederick the Great commissioned this opera house. Georg Wenzeslaus von Knobelsdorff designed its Palladian architecture, with symmetry and classical forms shaping the freestanding structure. Its north and west façades mirror elevations at Stourhead and Wanstead.

Construction ran from 1741 to 1743 as the first element of the planned Forum Fridericianum. That wider urban project was never fully realised. World War II damage led to reconstruction from 1951 to 1955, when the opera house reopened. A later renovation improved acoustics and facilities before reopening in 2017. Its repertoire has included premieres of Weber’s Der Freischütz and Alban Berg’s Wozzeck, alongside classical and contemporary works. The Staatskapelle Berlin orchestra performs in this venue.

The house served as East Germany’s state opera after the war until German reunification. Many Jewish ensemble members faced dismissal under the Nazi regime. During the Cold War, its East Berlin location brought cultural isolation despite its broad repertoire. Yet classical and contemporary works remained part of its programme. Richard Strauss and Felix Mendelssohn were among its notable musical figures.
