Schleuse Mühlendamm stands beside the Spree in Berlin’s Mitte district, within the Spree-Oder waterway. The lock serves navigation on the city’s Spree.

A wooden lock occupied Cölln’s city ditch in 1578, providing the site’s earliest recorded predecessor. The present structure began as a single-chamber lock in 1894, after mill operations ended at Mühlendamm in 1880. Between 1936 and 1942, engineers converted it into a double-chamber lock for ships carrying up to 1,000 tonnes.

The north chamber measures 11.75 metres across, while the south chamber measures 12 metres. A fall of 1.51 metres passes through steel sheet-pile walls and reinforced-concrete heads. Welded-steel gates weigh about 12 tonnes each and move through hydraulic cylinders, while segment gates fill and empty the chambers. Monument protection preserves this working waterway structure as part of Berlin’s engineering history.
