The Gouverneurshaus marks a chapter in Berlin’s architectural history through a reconstructed Baroque facade at Unter den Linden 11. Friedrich Wilhelm Diterichs designed the original building in 1721. His work drew on Martin Heinrich Böhme, his mentor, and incorporated elements associated with Schlüter. The building became the governor’s residence in 1732. In 1808, its role changed when the city converted the building into a civil court. That conversion enlarged mezzanine windows and added small round attic windows. Around 1900, an additional floor altered the building’s appearance. Rathausstraße redesign led to the original structure’s demolition in 1967. Fritz Meinhardt completed the reconstruction at Unter den Linden 11, preserving the facade’s early nineteenth-century design. The reconstruction lacks the original portal and royal monogram. Two recessed facade fields give the design a distinctive sense of depth. The reconstructed Gouverneurshaus forms part of Humboldt University and accommodates various institutes. Here, preserved Baroque elements connect a former residence and court with Berlin’s university setting.
