The Französischer Dom stands on Berlin’s Gendarmenmarkt as an architectural ensemble of a church and a separate domed tower. Louis Cayart and Abraham Quesnay built the church for Berlin’s Huguenot community. Construction took place between 1701 and 1705, while Carl von Gontard added the domed tower in 1785. The tower remains separate from the church. Its name refers to the dome, not to cathedral status. The church reflects Huguenot history, while the tower contains a Huguenot museum and a public observation deck. From the deck, Berlin’s downtown forms the view. An organ entered the church in 1753, and the interior later retained a style associated with Calvinist simplicity. World War II heavily damaged the building. Reconstruction ran from 1977 to 1981, and the site hosts services, concerts, and Evangelical Church conventions. A basement restaurant adds another recorded feature, with French-inspired cuisine beneath the historic church and tower ensemble. Gendarmenmarkt frames the entire site.
