Riedensee lies on Germany’s Baltic shore, where reeds, low sand, and dunes frame a protected strand lake. A narrow beach barrier separates its lagoon waters from the sea.

Wind and storms push saltwater and sand across that barrier, while calmer weather can draw the water back. This movement creates sand tongues, islands, and bare beaches. In summer, fresh sand provides nesting ground for rare shorebirds, while ducks and swans shelter among wind-protected reeds. Two wooden observation platforms rise beside the beach for scanning these quieter stretches with binoculars. NABU rangers and volunteers use dune fences and temporary enclosed beach islands to keep disturbance away from nests. Successful shorebird broods and young shelducks show what those protected spaces can support.

The salt-loving beetle Meerstrand-Ahlenläufer survives here, among the coastline’s few remaining places for this species. A bird may tend young beside a reed gap.
