The View of the amphitheater offers a clear perspective over the ancient Roman ruins in Durrës. The ruins stand within the historic city of Durrës. The Roman amphitheatre was built in the early second century during Emperor Trajan’s reign. It once held more than twenty thousand spectators. Public events, including gladiator games and performances, took place inside the structure. A later earthquake damaged the ancient Roman amphitheatre. Houses eventually covered parts of the structure. The amphitheatre was rediscovered and partly excavated during the twentieth century. Restored chapels with mosaics form part of the site, which functions as a museum. Durrës began around the seventh century BC through Greek and Illyrian cooperation. Greek colonists from Corinth and Corcyra founded Durrës with the Taulantii around that period. The city later became the starting point of Via Egnatia, a Roman road linking the Adriatic coast with Byzantium. Byzantium corresponds to present-day Istanbul. From this viewpoint, the surviving ruins connect Durrës with its Roman past. The amphitheatre remains one of the city’s key archaeological landmarks.
