Rodon is a sculpture in Bashkia Durrës, Albania, representing Redon, an ancient Illyrian sea god linked with sailors and travelers. Redon protected sailors and travelers crossing the Adriatic Sea. The figure carries the petasos, a broad-brimmed hat that signalled travel and connected Redon with the Greek god Hermes. The broad petasos marks travel, movement, and protection. Ancient coins from Lissus provide the earliest images of Redon, showing a male head with the Greek inscription REDON. Later coins preserved his image after Roman conquest. Archaeological inscriptions and artefacts indicate that Redon’s worship continued along the coast from Dyrrhachium to Scodra. The cult also reached northern Illyria before Roman rule. Redon reflects how Illyrian traditions absorbed Greek influences while remaining connected to coastal trade, seafaring, and local identity. Cape Rodon preserves a related name in Albania. Coins bearing Redon’s image circulated through Lissus, Dyrrhachium, Scodra, and Daorson. These places preserve Redon’s wider Illyrian cultural setting.
