Pjesë Muri nga Fortifikimi i Durrësit preserves a visible section of the ancient defensive walls of Durrës, Albania. The fortifications protected Durrës from its earliest foundations. Large cyclopean stone blocks mark the oldest building tradition recorded for these city walls. Byzantine rebuilding gave them layered brick defenses across the city. Emperor Anastasius I strengthened Durrës after an earthquake, leaving a major phase in the fortifications’ history. Later rulers changed the walls again over many centuries. Venetian and Ottoman modifications added new towers, gates, battlements, and a smaller enclosed area. The surviving masonry shows these successive changes. Nearby defensive structures include a Venetian Tower built over an older Byzantine tower, with ancient blocks and reliefs. Narrow stairs lead through its domed interior inside the tower. At this spot, layers of stone connect Durrës’s ancient, Byzantine, Venetian, and Ottoman pasts. The walls also reflect the city’s strategic importance.
