Muret e Portës preserves remnants of a fortified wall and city gate near Durrës’s Porto Romano area. The site belonged to the ancient city of Dyrrhachium.

Built from stone and brick, the defensive structure guarded the city’s northern approach in late antiquity. Emperor Anastasius is associated with the wall’s strengthening. The gate controlled entry from the north while surrounding fortifications narrowed the land between sea and lagoon. Water protected the city along its seaward and lagoon-facing sides.

The wall formed part of a broader defensive system that made Dyrrhachium nearly island-like. A rectangular tower remains beside sections of the original fortification. The Albanian name refers to the walls of the gate, while Portëza and Porto Romano identify the area. Modern industry has transformed the wider surrounding landscape.

Apartment blocks, oil depots, docks, and concrete now stand close to surviving ancient stonework. Construction damaged or destroyed much of the wall. Surviving remains connect Durrës’s ancient defences with its industrial and residential landscape.
